A Tip From Kinetic Computer Services ...Cannot locate Removable Storage Manager in Windows Server 2008 R2 when trying to restore a .bkf file with Windows NT Backup Restore
Description of the ProblemYou have Windows Server 2008 R2 and wish to use NT Backup to restore files from a .bkf file created on an earlier version of Windows. You found information, possibly from within the help files for Windows Server Backup, informing you that you can restore .bkf files on Windows Server 2008 with the downloadable "Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility". You downloaded the utility via the provided link. When you attempted to run it, the utility advised you that the Removable Storage Manager feature of Windows 2008 must be installed. You opened the Add Features Wizard in Server Manager, but could not locate Removable Storage Manager. CauseThere is a different version of the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility for Windows Server 2008 R2. The documentation and hotlink in the Windows Server Backup help files were not updated to reflect this change. SolutionYou can download the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility for Windows Server 2008 R2 as a hotfix from Microsoft. The download location is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974674, entitled "Description of the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility for Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2". This hotfix is all you will need to restore .bkf files; there is no need to install Removable Storage Manager or any other features.
