E-mail messages in Windows Live Mail appear in a maximized window that you cannot resize or "restore down."

Description of the Problem

When you open an e-mail message in Windows Live Mail, the message window opens maximized, covering the entire desktop, but you wish to view the message in a smaller window instead. There is a box at the upper right corner of the maximized window labeled "Restore Down." When you click it, the tooltip of the button changes to "Maximize," but the message window does not resize (or it resizes by an insignificant amount), and you are unable to grab the edges of the window with your pointer to resize it manually.

You had previously been able to read e-mail messages in Windows Live Mail in a window.

Solution

This common issue with Windows Live Mail is easy to fix. First, click on the "Restore Down" button at the upper right corner so that the tooltip changes to read "Maximize." Next, right-click on the title bar across the top of the desktop (the same bar where the "Restore Down/Maximize" button appears). Choose "Move" from the right-click context menu. The pointer will change to a four-headed arrow. Click on the title bar and drag the window down and to the left. You will now be able to grab the corner or sides of the message window so that you can resize it manually. The "Maximize/Restore Down" button should work normally from now on.
